FCA 1: Foundations of Relational/Systemic Practice, Theories & Models

This area facilitates students developing competencies in the foundations and critical epistemological issues of MFTs. It includes the historical development of the relational/systemic perspective and contemporary conceptual foundations of MFTs, and early and contemporary models of MFT, including evidence-based practice and the biopsychosocial perspective.

This week provides the opportunity for you to connect with your professor.  It is a chance to become acquainted with one another, or to deepen your connection if you are already acquainted, and to discuss how this course will lay a solid foundation for your study of and preparation to join the field of MFT.  Please plan to review the concepts in Chapter 3 of the Gehart (2014) text, or if you have not yet read this chapter please do so.  You will review much of this information with your professor as it lays the groundwork for your study of the postmodern models of MFT and the recovery model.

Please make sure to the review the lecture on Postmodernism. The discussion on postmodernism and social constructionism was filmed at the AAMFT Conference in Milwaukee, 2014. On the panel: Dr Annabelle Goodwin, Dr Kristi Harrison, Dr Shatavia Thomas, and Dr Valerie Glass. The panel is moderated by Dr Yulia Watters. It will help you to complete the assignment for this and the following week.

Be sure to carefully review this Week’s resources.  You will be expected to apply the information from these resources when completing your assignments.

AATBS Materials Note:

As part of the resources acquired with the purchase of the AATBS materials, you will have an opportunity to register for a mock National/California Examination. Please do not register for this examination, since you only have a limited timeline for taking advantage of this resource. You will be taking the exam during your Clinical Internship course and will receive additional guidelines on how to move forward with that activity.

Product Quick Look: Skype meeting with Faculty.
If you do not currently have a free Skype video conferencing account, go to the Skype webpage ( and set up a free account to be used in this activity and throughout the program. If you already have a personal Skype account please feel free to use it.

Please prepare a response to each of the items below and then schedule a Skype session with your professor during the first week of the class. In this interaction you will discuss concepts regarding social constructionism, postmodernism and their relationship to MFT as well as the recovery model (Gehart, 2014).

To help lay the foundation for your study of Classic Models of MFT, prepare to discuss the following (your faculty member will guide the discussion to focus in on her or his concepts of choice):

Social Constructionism:  What are the similarities and differences between systems theory and social constructionism?  What are some of the constructs of the theorists related to social constructionism?

Postmodern Philosophy:  What are the primary postmodern assumptions?  What does Gehart (2014) articulate as the postmodern spirit and how has that impacted those MFTs who consider themselves postmodernists?

Recovery Model:  What is the definition of mental health recovery?  What are the primary components in this model?

Consult with your professor about selection of a personal model of MFT.

Additionally, find one concept that you do not fully understand and discuss this concept with your professor in order to gain an understanding of it.

In addition to covering these areas, you can address any questions you have about the syllabus and the assignments for this course.  You can make arrangements for this meeting with your professor via e-mail.  If it is not possible to schedule a Skype appointment, you may seek approval from your professor to submit this as a Word document or a video recorded message.

Length:  20 minute conversation (with a one-sentence Word document uploaded to confirm the meeting) or a 1-2 page summary of responses to the questions

Complete the assignment by uploading either a Word document confirmation of the Skype session (or video) or a Word document summary of your responses by clicking on the Upload Assignment button.
